From a garage label to a music revolution
Motown made music history: In 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. founded the label in a Detroit garage with just $800—driven by the vision of “Hitsville USA.” What followed was an unprecedented success story: Between 1961 and 1971 alone, Motown scored 110 Top Ten hits and shaped the “Sound of Young America” with its unmistakable mix of soul, pop, and R&B. Gordy succeeded in making African American music accessible to a broad audience and in overcoming cultural boundaries. The Sound of Classic Motown combines this fascinating history with personal anecdotes, bringing to life an era that continues to shape the music world to this day.
